Features of the facility
- ・This facility was established in 2001 as the first charged particle therapy facility established by a local government.
- ・This is the world's first charged particle therapy facility where both heavy ion and proton beams can be used. The more appropriate beam for a targeted cancer can be selected.
- ・Proton radiotherapy began in 2003 and heavy ion radiotherapy began in 2005. A total of over 7,500 patients were treated here (approximately 2,400 of whom underwent heavy ion radiotherapy) between 2003, when the therapy was approved as advanced medical technology, and May 2016.
- ・This facility can admit many patients, and treat up to 80 to 90 patients per day using heavy ion and proton radiotherapies.

Diseases targeted, and the estimated period of treatment
The cancers listed below are targeted in heavy ion radiotherapy.
Depending on which is more appropriate for the targeted disease, proton or heavy ion beams can be used for the treatment.
Disease | Beam type | Estimate of the irradiation fractions |
---|---|---|
Skull base tumors | Heavy ion beam; Proton beam | 16 to 32 |
Head and neck tumors | Heavy ion beam; Proton beam | 16 to 32 |
Non-small-cell lung cancer | Heavy ion beam; Proton beam | 4 to 37 |
Mediastinal tumors | Heavy ion beam; Proton beam | 16 to 37 |
Liver cell carcinoma (primary liver cancer) | Heavy ion beam; Proton beam | 4 to 20 |
Pancreatic cancer (primary pancreatic cancer) | *Only proton beam | 25 |
Renal cell carcinoma (primary renal cancer) | Heavy ion beam; Proton beam | 12 to 35 | Prostate cancer | *Only proton beam | 37 to 39 | Rectal cancer (postoperative recurrence) | Heavy ion beam; Proton beam | 16 to 35 |
Bone and soft tissue tumors | Heavy ion beam; Proton beam | 16 to 32 |
Metastatic tumor (solitary) | Heavy ion beam; Proton beam | 4 to 35 |
To undergo a medical examination
This center can provide only charged particle therapy. Other clinical practices and cancer diagnostic tests are requested from the attending physician. After being treated here, the patient is required to have a consultation and undergo periodic examinations at the patient's original hospital. This center follows up the patient in close cooperation with the patient's original hospital using a medical chart prepared by the center.
* In addition, patients from overseas are requested to read Flow of the therapy and International medical support.
